Windows Mobile 7 rumour update – it’s the Zune Phone!
No sooner did we post an update on Windows Mobile 7 rumours than we get another ‘tipster’ completely dismissing almost everything in our first rumour update! Oh man, I give up… just let the Mobile World Congress appear quickly… oh, the new rumours? Here you go:
- Backwards compatibility: NONE!
- UI: Looks exactly like the Zune HD with phone functionality built in; focus is currently on games (inc XBox Live functionality)
- Hardware: MS will specify the PRECISE configuration (one screen size [ideally OLED], RAM size, minimum processor, etc)
- Customisation: No background processing + no system resource access + no threaded processes
- Apps: There will be a Microsoft App store with an easy approval process
So WOW… this really is different… and I think I like it… nope, I think I LOVE IT. The main reason I love it is because this is the Zune phone that everyone wanted so much; the Zune HD has been praised for its OS so why not mimic it on a mobile? Have a look at the Zune in action below and just comment below on how gorgeous that is:
The other reason I love it is because of MS’ strict hardware requirements for the mobile; this can only mean ONE thing: optimisation. My brother asked me the other day why a similary specced Mac can outperform a PC and the reason for that (IMHO) is because of the diversity on PC’s – different processors, graphics cards, RAM, etc – this means that the Windows OS has to cater for a ridiculous number of configurations thereby decreasing efficiency. The Mac on the other hand has one spec so the OS can be optimised to the parts. If Microsoft is really going down this route then they are basically following the Apple way and if it works for Apple then why can’t it work for MS. However, the question arises how one handset manufacturer can actually differentiate their WM7 phone from another? It’s an interesting question and maybe this can really push the hardware side of handset development to a different level.
Hardware diversity with an optimised OS – I’ll have me some of that thank you.
Once again, please do post in the comments just how much saliva you are dribbling around now and your progress on the time machine to take us all up to the Mobile World Congress on 15 February!
